“CA Hospital targeted by Hackers”
Every year, hackers make tens of millions of dollars by holding computers for ransom. In February 2016, the latest victim, was a California hospital. The hospital Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, had to pay $17,000 to have its server reactivated. The attack against the hospital, locked its files, prevented electronic communications and gave the hospital directions to pay a ransom in return for the encryption key. Allen Stefanek, President and CEO of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, said, “The quickest and most efficient way to restore our systems and administrative functions was to pay the ransom and obtain the decryption key”, which they did pay the ransom. The hospital has restored its EMR systems and all systems being used were thoroughly tested and cleared of any malware. For the full story, click here
